The State of Handsfree Legislation

As you may be aware, many states are passing statewide bans prohibiting cell phone use while driving unless using a hands-free device such as a headset or speakerphone. States most recently adopting handsfree legislation include California and Washington, whose laws take effect July 1. They join three other states, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as cities such as the District of Columbia, Detroit and Chicago, in banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. Like seat belt laws, many handsfree laws initially were secondary offenses. Now, however, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut all have primary laws on the books and their fines vary for infractions. These laws are summarized below.
