The second half of 2010 saw quite a bit of activity with new hands-free legislation and new texting bans across various states in the U.S.

The State of Delaware goes hands free on January 1, 2011, and there are now 30 states with texting bans while allowing hands-free usage of wireless phones. As a result, there’s never been a better time to promote hands-free solutions to your customers. 

With the increase in hands-free legislation and texting bans, there is an increased need to have more solutions readily available on the sales floor to help your customers go hands free.

The State of Hands-Free Legislation

To date, 8 states, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. Another 29 states and D.C. ban all cell phone use by novice drivers, while 18 states and D.C. ban school bus drivers from using cell phones when passengers are present. Others ban text messaging by all drivers (30 states plus D.C. and Guam), novice drivers (8 states), and school bus drivers (2 states). Many states practice primary enforcement, meaning an officer may cite a driver for using a handheld cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place. Additionally, some local jurisdictions have their own regulations.
