    Matrix Design Group is an engineering service, hoist systems and mine safety technology company. Matrix mine safety technology includes our production miner & equipment tracking system (METS) as well as underground network design, installation and service.
    METS, the industry-leading underground tracking system, is installed and in daily production use in mines in WV, KY, IL, IN, PA and NM. Designed and built for operation in underground mining environments, METS is the proven choice for reliable tracking.

    Matrix has designed two METS systems, an Ethernet-based system, METS 1.0, and an Intrinsically Safe system, METS 2.1. Both versions use METS easy-to-use software and high-strength, MSHA-approved tracking tags which transmit an identifying signal to ’Readers’ located at strategic points throughout a mine.

    METS 2.1 was specifically developed to meet anticipated U.S. MINER Act underground tracking requirements. This system uses a wired mesh infrastructure to provide redundant, post-accident power and data to Intrinsically Safe (IS) readers. These readers are connected using inexpensive coaxial cable. Each reader may have up to four connections for redundant communication and power paths back to a hub mounted either above ground or in a specially designed underground XP enclosure. Each hub provides copper Ethernet switch connectivity, with optional fiber ports available. METS is an invaluable tool for increasing the safety, productivity, and efficiency of your mining operations. The system is scalable to accommodate small or large operations, and flexible to keep up with the ever-changing plans of soft rock operations like coal. Since receiving Part 23 Intrinsic Safety approval from MSHA (23-A080013-0) for the system, Matrix can supply a complete tracking solution.

    Becker/SMC

    Becker/SMC provides a range of Communications solutions that include VHF & UHF Leaky Feeder Systems designed to provide seamless communications throughout an underground mine or tunnel. The Leaky Feeder cable acts as a mine‐wide antenna, eliminating the need to install and maintain dozens of hard‐wired cables and signal wires. The RF signals from the Base Station are transmitted throughout the site network over the Leaky Feeder System. This enables site wide personnel communication, system monitoring as well as control of electrical equipment (e.g., fans and pumps). Additional capabilities can provide video streaming from strategic locations to monitor safety, process or personnel throughout the site.

    Normal coaxial cable is designed to keep RF signals within the cable and to block any external signals and noise from penetrating. Leaky Feeder cable is designed to intentionally ‘leak’ or radiate the RF signal out, as well as allow radio transceiver signals into the cable. To sustain the RF signal levels over long distances, Line Amplifiers are inserted along the Leaky Feeder cable. Becker/SMC offers VHF and UHF Leaky Feeder Systems, each providing reliable and robust communications solutions for the most demanding installations.
