Wireless Internet Demand Surges Into the New Year

By John Celentano, TESSCO Technologies | The Wireless Journal Vol. 18, No. 6, DEC 2011 / JAN 2012

The Year That Was

2011 was an eventful year in the U.S. wireless market. AT&T offered to acquire T-Mobile USA to become a mega-carrier. Apple® became the darling of the wireless industry with
the introduction of several new versions of the iPhone® and iPad® that customers bought in huge volumes. Together, wireless carriers rolled out 137 new handheld devices, mainly smartphones, which are driving huge data volumes which tax every network’s throughput and backhaul capabilities. To meet the demand, carriers have forecasted 2011 aggregate network investment levels of nearly $25 billion in CAPEX, a five percent increase over 2010 levels. AT&T, Verizon, and MetroPCS kept their LTE deployments rolling, while Sprint and LightSquared moved closer to launching their respective visions for advanced networks, although LightSquared had to take time to sort out interference issues with the GPS system. Meanwhile, Clearwire maintained a holding pattern as it sought new funding sources to complete its network buildout. And in the end, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revamped the long-standing Universal Services Fund (USF) to make a way for small rural carriers to fund their wireless broadband network growth...
