Nera Networks Builds High Capacity Scalable 3G Wireless Backbone
As featured in The Wireless Journal (January/February 2010)
Coral Wireless, DBA Mobi PCS, was formed in 2003 to bring innovative communication services to Hawaii. Mobi PCS offers affordable, unlimited, pay-as-you-go plans with local calling areas on the islands of Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kauai, and Molokai. The cellular network uses advanced CDMA technology.
Nera Networks provides innovative turnkey wireless backhaul solutions. Nera's Evolution Series Microwave Radio products were ideally suited to the Mobi PCS backhaul requirement for today and are capacity scalable bia software for ease in future expansions.

Unsurpassed Price to Performance Ratio from Nera
Nera's Evolution IP Access Standard Power Link provides a 100 Mbps, full duplex licensed link for under $10,000!
Evolution IP is an Ethernet/IP access network solution ideally suited for backhaul of WiMAX and other last mile technologies, and for building professional enterprise networks. This reliable, high performance carrier-grade link is available in 18 GHz as well as three 11 GHz sub-bands.
The Evolution Series IP offers QoS support with configurable prioritization and queuing rules safeguards your revenue generating services from loss of packets.
Benefits
-
Improved system gain over traditional Ethernet over SDH solutions
-
Improved capacity over unlicensed Ethernet links
-
Mix of IP and TDM traffic capability
-
High System Gain
-
2 x 10/100BaseT
-
Low Latency
-
4 x T1
Network Applications
The Evolution series can handle three network applications:
WiMAX Backhaul
- Well suited for backhaul of traffic from point-to-multipoint radio access systems like WiMAX.
- Selectable data -rate ranging from 6 Mb/s to 600 Mb/s
Private Networks Operators
-
Suitable for most private networks whether whether they are carrying legacy services or data only.
-
Flexibility, and simplicity, and combined with a predictable reliability, proves for many network owners to be an unbeatable combination.
Mobile (BTS) Backhaul
-
Ideal for demanding and critical applications such as BTS backhaul of BTS traffic.
-
Optional embedded ADM multiplexer and cross-connect enables rout traffic routing of traffic without the need for external cabling.
-
Traffic circuits can be individually protected via ring or mesh topologies.
System Gain for Microwave Paths- A Value Proposition
You hear it often-the price of the microwave link needs to be lower. But be sure to consider the total overall installed cost. In many cases the upfront cost of the MW link is only part of the story and system gain may actually be a much more important issue.
The higher the calculated system gain the better your path availability. Higher system gain may allow you to use smaller antennas.
Example:
-
Microwave path length is 12 miles with a capacity of 150 Mbps. Frequency chosen is 11 GHz.
-
Nera’s system gain for an 11 GHz 150 Mbps capacity MW link is 101 db. Every 3db difference in system gain typically means one antenna size larger to meet the same path availability.
-
In this case you could probably use a 2 ft. dish with the Nera link but might require at least a 6ft. dish (or larger) with the competitor.
-
Be sure to add the additional cost of the larger antennas into the overall cost - in this case at least $2,000 or more per antenna (you’ll need 2 so that’s at least $4,000 per link).
-
An average tower owner charges $100/foot/antenna/month for leasing the space. So in this case add $400 for each antenna (2 per link= $800) for 12 months for a first year additional cost of $9,600. FCC licenses are for 10 years so over 10 years that is an additional $96,000 in leasing costs.
-
And there are additional installation charges to consider. A 2 ft. dish can sometimes be installed by one person but a 6 ft. dish requires 3 people and a boom truck - add another $3,000 to your installation costs.
-
End result? Unless the end user makes his own antennas, has his own boom truck and does his own installation, and unless he owns the towers: in the first year he’ll have to spend an additional $16,600 over and above the costs of the MW link to get comparable performance. And don’t forget an additional $96,000 over 10 years for those tower leasing costs!
