    RAD Data Communications

"Anything over anything." RAD has the solution for transporting any type of voice, data or video signal that needs to be transported to a distant location over any kind of connection. (PDF)

    Featured Application

Reduce Costs and Improve Coordination by Extending Two-Way Radio over IP. For public safety agencies with no central monitoring of their fire, police, ambulance and other communications, it has been a major challenge to coordinate these disparate groups and make sure they can talk to each other. Other organizations managing two-way systems in fast-growing or remote areas have found it hard to extend their coverage fast enough to meet demands.

For a fraction of the cost of available repeater products, the RAD Airmux-200 broadband radio and IPmux-1E gateway delivers two-way radio traffic over wireless Ethernet links (PDF) in the 4.9 GHz band.

Leased Line Replacement for Encrypted TDM Circuits

Airmux 400 Point to Point Links
    IPMUX-216 TDMoIP Gateway

There is a large installed base of data encryption devices that only offer a TDM uplink. However, they need not be a slave to leased TDM circuits and their recurring costs. Many customers use Pseudowire products from RAD, including the Airmux for wireless, or the IPmux for fiber, to transmit the encrypted data. This allows them to eliminate the recurring costs without having to replace the expensive encryption boxes.

With the release of Version 2.4.5 of the Airmux-400, RAD Data Communications is leading the way for cellular and 4G/LTE high-capacity wireless backhaul. The new version of Airmux-400 provides up to 100 Mbps full-duplex throughput of Ethernet and TDM traffic over license-free frequencies. This sub-6 GHz radio provides a high-capacity, hassle-free alternative to licensed broadband microwave, paving the way for the transition from legacy TDM to an all-IP-based network.

Cellular operators, increasingly challenged with the exploding bandwidth requirements of the mobile masses, will find that the Airmux-400 delivers exceptional value for backhaul requirements. With extremely easy installation and maintenance, rock-solid stability, and ample bandwidth capacity, the Airmux-400 is an ideal solution for carriers looking for a way to enhance backhaul capacity while reducing their cost per bit, minimizing both capital and operating expenditures and increasing revenue.

The Airmux-400 operates in symmetric mode, as well as in adaptive asymmetric mode, whereby capacity is dynamically allocated between uplink and downlink based on traffic loads and air-interface conditions. Extremely simple to install and maintain, systems operate flawlessly in the most challenging environments, including non-line-of-site scenarios, interference-ridden environments, and extreme temperatures.

The multiband radio capability provides tremendous flexibility, enabling users to select operating frequencies within the 2.4, 5.3, 5.4, and 5.8 GHz bands, as well as the public safety 4.9 GHz band. The unit includes a 2-year service contract with 24/7/365 priority technical phone support and next-business-day shipping of replacement parts.

100 Mbps Asymmetric Throughput Wireless Multiplexer

Airmux-400 Point-to-Point LinksRAD Data Communications continues to improve upon its high-capacity Airmux-400 broadband wireless multiplexer with the release of version 2.4, introducing a choice of throughput ordering options based on application type and bandwidth requirements.

Recognizing the fact that many Ethernet applications are asymmetric by nature, RAD now offers the Airmux-400 with a maximum aggregate throughput of up to 100 Mbps asymmetric, with user-selectable uplink/downlink capacity configuration (50/50 percent up to 95/5 percent). This makes it an ideal solution for Ethernet-heavy IP backhaul and ISP applications.

Meanwhile, for broadband access applications that require combined TDM (up to 16 T1/E1s) and IP extension, the Airmux-400 can be ordered to support a maximum net throughput of up to 50 Mbps full duplex.

Regardless of selected throughput option, all Airmux-400 users enjoy the carrier-class performance, versatility and affordability for which the Airmux-400 is known. Multiband radio capabilities allow a single platform to be programmed to operate anywhere within a variety of license-exempt sub-6 GHz frequencies (as well as the licensed 4.9 GHz public safety band).

Other significant features include superior spectral efficiency based on MIMO/OFDM, 128-bit advanced encryption, 1+1 link redundancy, hub site synchronization, and a robust air interface protocol.

The New Optimux-106—Cost Effective, Simple, Plug-and-Play

Optimux 106The Optimux 106 4T1 multiplexer combines four T1 links over one fiber optic link. A pair of Optimux-4T1 units offer simple and low-cost connectivity for four T1 channels at distances up to 69 miles. Optional secondary links provide automatic switchover in the event of main link failure. Various optical interfaces are available as well as E1 electrical and optical versions.

The Airmux HEThe Airmux HE, currently available in 5.8 GHz, adds 7 dBm of transmit power to the original Airmux-200. Additionally, the HE option includes hardware support for synchronizing co-located units. The increased power allows customers to A) establish more reliable links for any given distance, B) reach a given distance with a smaller antenna or C) extend the link further than with the same-sized antenna using the regular Airmux.

    Diverse Applications

    • Oil and gas field transmission
    • Linking of two or more enterprise locations
    • Intra-connecting school districts
    • Cellular backhaul
    • WISP access links
    • TV and radio studio links
    • Wireless transmission of video surveillance

The versatile Airmux-200 point-to-point links provide native Ethernet and TDM transmission of up to a true user 18 Mbps full-duplex net throughput (36 aggregate). Advanced OFDM technology together with proprietary air protocol delivers optimal robustness and unmatched performance. Its interference-resistant mechanisms are specially designed for the sub-6GHz bands.

Their high-end links provide the same throughput and services as the standard Airmux-200 links, but they feature a higher dBm gain and are compatible with RAD's hub site synchronization technology, which allows for up to 8 point-to-point links to originate from a single location without creating any overlapping interference.

    WHITE PAPER
    Challenges and Opportunities

Leasing or self-building backhaul networks is a key strategic decision that mobile operators have to take—even more so in the mobile broadband era when EV-DO, HSPA, Mobile WiMAX and LTE promise to drive backhaul bandwidth demand at some urban cell sites to up to 50 Mbps within five years.

This paper presents a brief overview of the mobile backhaul market, illustrates the unique challenges facing mobile operators and backhaul transport providers and describes various strategies for commercially viable transport of multi-generation mobile technologies over fiber, fixed wireless and TDM/SONET/SDH infrastructures. In particular, this paper stresses the performance criteria that mobile operators expect if they are to trust their backhaul network to third parties. [continue reading]
