The Operations Manager at this plant wanted to replace the portable radios used by line operators with fixed location radios. "They keep losing and breaking the portables," he said.
The plant has 18 lines. Each line has a specific task; such as, slicing cheese, packaging food or filling barrels with up to 550 lbs of cheese that must sit for up to 6 months due to the aging process. If a line has a problem the operator must call maintenance on his radio to fix the problem promptly.
The plant operates 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Initially, portable radios were issued to each operator so they could notify maintenance but, the portables were constantly being lost, dropped and misplaced hence, the operator was without communication. This led to delays, bottlenecks and increased costs in manufacturing, let alone the added expense to replace the portable radio.
