Times LMR low loss coax cables have RF performance comparable to traditional corrugated copper cables, but also offer flexibility, non-kinking and easy, fast connector installation that copper can't match. And when compared with other RG type braided cables, LMR cables offer far lower loss and better RF shielding.

A Lightning Protection System for Wireless Telecom Sites

Site grounding is the foundation for effective lightning protection at communications sites.

By Bogdan “Bogey” Klobassa

Read MoreSeveral factors affect successful implementation of lightning protection for wireless networks, such as understanding lightning-stroke characteristics, antenna site layout conditions, structural protection, equipment protection and construction of a low-impedance ground system designed for fast lightning transient response.

Proper grounding and bonding design play a critical role in the operation of every surge protection device installed on a communications site. Proper design applies without exception to all radiofrequency (RF), data, telemetry, AC and DC input/output ports. Every lightning protection device’s primary function is its ability to limit the differential voltage across an equipment I/O port while conducting as much event current as possible to earth ground. Performance of every surge protection device will be affected not only by the manufacturer’s specifi cation, but also to a great extent by the installation method. Surge protection device performance differs signifi cantly between a bench test and an on-site test where the ground resistance and inductance of all grounding and bonding connections, not to mention the undefined protected load impedance at the lightning frequency, are determining factors.

Times Microwave Systems Receives MSHA Approvals for LMR-FR Series Cables

The LMR-FR series of cables are now MSHA (Mining, Safety and Health Administration) approved. They will be marked with the MSHA qualification reference number, and can now be used in mining applications where MSHA approvals are required.

The MSHA reference number is "P-07-KA070010-MSHA", and in addition to receiving the MSHA approval, Times also has received the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection "P" approval marking. This "P" marking is a requirement for any cables that will be installed in mines in the state of State of Pennsylvania.

LMR-FR cables are low loss, flexible, non-kinking RF transmission line cables that utilize easy-to-install connectors and are suitable for use as antenna feeders, system jumpers and interconnects.

Lightning Protection Products for RF Communication Networks

Single Gas Tube Surge Protector, DINF/DINF The Times-Protect™ LP-GTR series of DC pass RF lightning and surge protection products from Times Microwave Systems has been expanded to cover requirements for higher-power handling needs. The LP-GTR-N series will handle either 50 or 210 watts and the LP-GTR-D series will accommodate 50, 210 or 500 watts. These devices are designed to pass DC for applications requiring power to be supplied to the tower top electronics. The outstanding RF performance LP-GTR series combined with its ability to handle high surge currents makes it the perfect protection solution for distributed antenna systems, tower-mounted amplifiers and GPS systems. The LP-GTR product line is weatherized to IP67, suitable for outdoor, as well as indoor installations, and rugged to withstand the harshest installation environments. The N connector designs cover the entire frequency spectrum from DC through 3000 MHz, while the 716 DIN types can be used from DC through 2500 MHz. All units come supplied with a universal right-angle bracket adaptor to accommodate various mounting and grounding options.

Faster, More Accurate RF Cable Connectors

Silverline QMA Connector from Times Microwave SystemsTimes Micro Systems' SilverLine QMA "quick-disconnect" test cables and adapters feature a secure, "snap-on, pull-off" design, so they can be installed up to 10 times faster than SMA connectors. This threadless design reduces the need for wrench clearance, saving space and allowing denser packing. SilverLine QMA connectors eliminate the uncertainty in RF power output and sensitivity measurements associated with BNC adapters while providing an extra heavy duty connector attachment with a 2500+ mating cycle life.
