AT&T has selected Ericsson as the official supplier for its upcoming 5G network expansion and C-band deployment. With Ericsson, AT&T’s goal is to expand its network across the nation, bringing 5G to more consumers, businesses, and first responders across large public venues, travel and transportation, public safety, and more.
According to AT&T, by the end of 2022 its planning to cover 70 to 75 million people with 5G using C-band, expanding that number to 200 million by the end of 2023. AT&T also disclosed it is anticipating investing between $6 to $8 billion for the C-band deployments over the course of the five-year period.
This deal will include Ericsson’s 5G radio access network (RAN) technologies like advanced antenna systems, which extend coverage and performance gains, advanced RAN coordination and carrier aggregation, which enhance coverage, capacity, and latency for mid-band and high-band, and its Cloud Link software.
“As we continue to expand our nationwide 5G network, Ericsson’s technology offerings and 5G expertise will assist with our network evolution,” said Scott Mair, president of AT&T Network Engineering and Operations. “This latest agreement provides the pathway for us to deploy Ericsson’s next-generation centralized RAN architecture, enabled by Fronthaul Gateway, with the ability to support future network enhancements, like the evolution to Cloud RAN.”
