The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) selected Verizon to install its 5G Ultra Wideband mobility service, which will include C-band, to seven Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) installations located in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
At each AFRC facility, Verizon Public Sector will deploy outdoor C-band radios to deliver 5G service for both personnel on base and the surrounding community, bringing significantly better coverage, higher speeds, lower latency, and increased bandwidth. Verizon said they will also be deploying a mix of 4G and 5G millimeter wave frequency indoors at certain AFRC locations. Verizon will be deploying equipment from a list of 5G radio access network (RAN) vendors including Ericsson and Samsung.
This deployment will expand Verizon’s 5G portfolio with the federal government and U.S. Air Force. In 2019, Verizon secured a win under the government’s Offer to Lease (OTL) program to improve wireless services to 10 Air Force Bases. Now with OTL 2b, Verizon’s 2021 win with AFRC, Verizon will be delivering 5G and other services to 17 different bases throughout the U.S.
“Serving as an indispensable partner to the military and their strategic digital transformation objectives is one of our highest priorities,” said Jennifer Chronis, Senior Vice President for Public Sector at Verizon. “Air Force leadership describes their modernization as a transition from an industrial-age force to an information-age force and Verizon Public Sector is their partner in that journey, providing a 5G network with the right technology solutions to meet their needs today, and into the future.”
