The CBRS band has made waves with its unique shared spectrum approach. The spectrum band is set to have its license auction soon, with high expectations building for it. In fact, CommScope’s Rashid Bhatti stated that, “The CBRS auction will be unlike any other ever conducted.”
The midband spectrum auction is set to take place in June and will offer many opportunities for those that acquire the licenses. Bhatti went on to say, “The number of licenses being offered (over 22,000) along with the county-based license areas means there should be something for everyone.” With this many offered licenses, analysts are making hefty predictions on how much money the upcoming 3.5GHz CBRS spectrum auction could generate.
Mobile Experts analyst Kyung Mun broke down their forecast of just how much each license could be valued at, with “a range from $0.30 per MHz-POP in dense urban areas to $0.003 per MHz-POP in rural areas.” It is expected that the auction will generate billions of dollars. Cowen, a research firm, has its Wall Street analysts predicting, “Auction proceeds could be ~$4.4B in total at $0.20 per MHz-POP.”
It’ll take until the beginning of summer to see if these revolutionary expectations come true, but there’s no denying how the CBRS spectrum is set to be a huge part of the upcoming wireless generation.
