Researchers at the University of Texas (UT) are launching a 6G research center, 6G@UT, with the help of major industry leaders including Samsung, AT&T, Intel, Qualcomm, and more. 6G@UT aims to lay the foundation for 6G, specifically focusing on aspects like the use of the terahertz spectrum as well as location, detection, and machine learning capabilities.
Several of the founding affiliates, including Samsung, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and InterDigital, will be funding, at minimum, two projects at the center for a three-year time span. These projects will bring together researchers from participating companies to work in conjunction with UT faculty and students to develop the foundational technologies for 6G. This includes core network technologies, wireless-specific machine learning algorithms, and advanced sensing technologies, to name a few.
“The advances in both wireless communications and machine learning over the past decade have been incredible, but separate,” said Jeffrey Andrews, Director of 6G@UT and professor in UT Austin’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “Coupled with vast new sensing and localization abilities, 6G will be defined by an unprecedented native intelligence, which will transform the ability of the network to provide incredible services.”
6G@UT is a major step in building out the next generation wireless of technology. For more information about the new research center and its mission, click here.
