On June 21, Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson unveiled its forecast regarding 5G mobile subscriptions. The report stated that 5G subscription penetration in North America is projected to reach 90 percent by 2027. This is the highest 5G penetration projection according to this latest report.
The newest Ericsson Mobility Report also indicated by the end of 2022, there will be one billion 5G mobile subscriptions worldwide. It explains that 5G technology is set to account for almost half of all mobile subscriptions globally by 2027, reaching a total of 4.4 billion subscriptions.
These latest findings have shown that global mobile network data traffic doubled in the past two years, due in large part to the increased smartphone and mobile broadband usage, in addition to the rapid digitalization of society and industries. The report also proves 5G to be scaling faster than all previous mobile technology generations, as nearly 25 percent of the world’s population currently has access to 5G coverage. If you just look at the first quarter of 2022 by itself, there was an additional 70 million 5G subscriptions.
“The deployment of 5G standalone (SA) networks is increasing in many regions as communications service providers (CSPs) gear up for innovation to address business opportunities beyond enhanced mobile broadband,” said Peter Jonsson, executive editor of the Ericsson Mobility Report. “A solid digital network infrastructure underpins enterprises’ digital transformation plans, and their new capabilities can be turned into new customer services.”
