Although 6G technology isn’t expected to arrive until 2030, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered 6G wireless could enable futuristic high-bandwidth, low-latency applications. AI will help 6G networks to optimize themselves in real-time thanks to its real-time data analysis and decision-making, thus enhancing network performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
6G is not only expected to be 50 times faster than 5G, it is also expected to deliver improvements in security, latency, connection density, user data rates, and much more. It is even said to be able to handle 10 million devices per square kilometer – a big jump from 1 million for 5G. The plan is for 6G to also support AI-enabled applications, including distributed data processing, distributed learning, AI computing, AI model execution, and AI inference. Other 6G benefits include:
New frequency spectrums to allow for universal service.
Connected devices will be able to transmit 3D measurements and modeling of the environment they’re in, allowing for new industrial applications.
Sustainable infrastructure to have the least possible environmental impact, using energy efficiently and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Designed with transparent, standardized, and interoperable interfaces so that all parts of the network, regardless of vendor, will work together.
Highly precise positioning with an accuracy of less than 10 centimeters.
“This (6G) deployment will present challenges because it’s such a high spectrum,” said Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Will Townsend. “But you can do some pretty incredible things with instantaneous connectivity. With terahertz, you’re going to get near-instantaneous latency, no lag, no jitter. You’re going to be able to do some sensory-type applications.”
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the future services and applications that AI will be able to support with the power of 6G technology will truly leave a lasting impact on our technological capabilities, including improved healthcare delivery, autonomous systems, and industrial automation.
