The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected Nokia to build the first-ever 4G network on the moon. NASA has granted Nokia’s Bell Labs, the industrial research arm of the company, $14.1 million dollars to build out an LTE/4G communication network, which will support 5G when upgraded in the future.

NASA awarded $370 million to 15 different companies to work towards building a human base on the moon as part of the Artemis Program, which plans to send astronauts to the moon by 2024 and sustain a human presence by 2028. As part of the Artemis Program, NASA contracted Nokia, in partnership with Intuitive Machines, to deploy a 4G network, which initial system is anticipated to be set up in late 2022.

According to NASA, a 4G network could offer a more dependable and greater-distance communication system than the radio standards that are present today. Nokia says its 4G network will provide critical communication capabilities, giving astronauts access to data transmission, high-definition video streaming, real-time navigation, and more.
