The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has initiated a Request for Comment (RFC) on policies to support 6G technology research, development and deployment.
The new RFC seeks public input on various topics from industry, academia, and other experts. While the request does not cover 6G-related spectrum issues, it is looking for perspective on the questions of:
The timing of 6G lab and field trials, commercial availability and what might accelerate the use of 6G rather than obsolete technologies.
How the U.S. government can ensure that all segments of society benefit from 6G
How 6G might be able to improve network resiliency during natural and/or man-made disasters that impact network performance or availability.
Alan Davidson, assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information and NTIA administrator, highlighted 6G as the next step in the mobile revolution, emphasizing the importance of early preparation for the potential advancements the technology will offer.
“While we are still realizing the full benefits of 5G, it is not too early to be planning for 6G,” said Davidson. “We look forward to learning more about this next-generation technology and how we can harness the innovations it will bring.”
The request is open for comments for 90 days following publication in the Federal Register.
