As 5G currently takes the world by storm, Samsung is already looking into the next generation of communication technology. Samsung recently released a white paper outlining the company’s vision for 6G, which could appear as soon as 2028.
In the white paper, Samsung provides a thorough overview of 6G, including trends, services, requirements, a timeline for rollout, and more. According to Samsung, with 6G we will see major improvements to speed, reliability, and latency compared to its predecessor, 5G.
6G Services & Requirements
With 6G comes a trio of advanced services, including:
High-Fidelity Mobile Holograms – 3D hologram displays.
Digital Replica – Virtual replication of people, devices, objects, places, and more.
Samsung has put three requirements into place that must be met to achieve the 6G services. These requirements include:
Performance – 6G requires a much higher data rate than 5G. 6G is expected to reach a peak data rate of 1,000 Gbps, a user experienced data rate of 1 Gbps, and air latency less than 100 microseconds.
Architectural – Designed to overcome the limited computation ability of mobile devices, allow the incorporation of new networks, and ensure Artificial Intelligence (AI) is deployed during the initial technology development stage.
Trustworthiness – Manage security and privacy threats that arise due to the openness of the communication systems.
Samsung also mentions a list of candidate technologies that could be necessary to meet the demands of 6G, including terahertz (THz) frequency bands, novel antenna technologies, spectrum sharing, and more.
Samsung expects the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) to start working on 6G in 2021 and anticipates the earliest commercialization to occur in 2028 and mass rollout by 2030. For more information about Samsung’s vision for 6G, read their white paper.
