T-Mobile has announced it is planning to shut down Sprint’s 4G LTE network by June 30, 2022. This comes as part of T-Mobile’s integration plan for Sprint as a result of the $26 billion acquisition that was finalized in April of 2020.
T-Mobile and Sprint merged with a commitment to building the most advanced and transformative 5G network experience for all. To do so, T-Mobile said its ”retiring older network technologies to free up resources and spectrum that will help us strengthen our entire network, move all customers to more advanced technologies, and bridge the Digital Divide.“ Another important piece of this effort is moving Sprint’s LTE spectrum to the T-Mobile network.
Along with Sprint’s 4G LTE network, T-Mobile plans to retire Sprint’s 3G (CDMA) network by January 1, 2021, and its own GSM 2G and UMTS 3G networks, although no date for this shut down has been set. T-Mobile is also currently in the process of moving Sprint’s legacy customers off their existing network, transferring approximately 33 percent of Sprint customers to the T-Mobile network thus far.
