Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are expanding their partnership and 5G collaboration to offer private mobile edge computing (MEC) capabilities for enterprises throughout the U.S. These capabilities will be deployed in locations such as factories, warehouses, and business campuses for enterprise customers needing a fully dedicated edge computing infrastructure on site that enables ultra-low latency, deeper customization, and higher levels of security.
This solution combines Verizon’s private 5G networks and private edge platform with AWS Outposts to offer a completely managed service and hybrid experience for customers. MEC will run on private networks, creating a single, secure, and cohesive connectivity, computing, and storage platform, without the customer needing their own comprehensive network and IT infrastructure.
Enterprise customers will be able to use Verizon and AWS’ private MEC to implement and support real-time applications from automation to logistics, predictive maintenance, monitoring, and quality assurance, to name a few. This will ultimately help these businesses improve safety, precision, and efficiency while reducing costs.
“Verizon’s 5G is the platform for 21st century innovation and customers are looking to rapidly innovate, improve performance, and create new revenue streams,” said Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon Business. “Developers are already creating new latency-dependent solutions that run on the Verizon/AWS public MEC service launched last year. Our private MEC offering will unlock that same potential for enterprise customers who need to maintain a secure, closed environment in factories, warehouses and other facilities.”
Corning Inc., a materials science and advanced manufacturing innovator, will be the first company to use the new private MEC solution at their factory in Hickory, NC.
