While some industries are being adversely impacted by COVID-19, others are seeing a rapid increase in demand. Specifically, wireless communications are playing a pivotal role in response efforts worldwide as the need to connect healthcare providers with patients is paramount.

According to an AbelsonTaylor survey, three out of four doctors have already increased their use of alternative methods to communicate with patients, with telemedicine services (106%) and video chat (159%) experiencing the biggest jumps. This expansion and accelerated growth is profoundly affecting the healthcare market and the way it operates, of which, will undoubtedly shape how healthcare is delivered moving forward. A new normal is being established and for those in the wireless industry, this means new opportunities are being created to support these critical networks.

The FCC recently deployed a COVID-19 Telehealth Program which provides $200 million in funding, to ensure healthcare providers remain connected to patients at their homes or mobile locations. This means, for eligible healthcare providers, the program will fully fund their telecommunications and information services and the devices necessary to provide critical care services until program funds have been expended or the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.

Further, data from a Veeva study revealed that in-person physician meetings have already declined significantly (more than 50% ) while emails jumped 263% between January and March of this year. These numbers alone, show a significant interest and willingness by users to adopt and engage in new ways, by both the provider and the patient. As telehealth services and video communications are becoming an increasingly popular channel for safely and effectively receiving treatment, a new sector of wireless-enabled, digital care is emerging.

To make this happen, companies like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, as well as smaller carriers, can expect ongoing increases in demand for reliable, high-performance wireless and 5G connectivity. Additionally, network building, equipment, and device companies will benefit from the growth that’s already been on the rise due to an increase in those working from home.

It is a pivotal time for both the healthcare industry and for the communications industry, and with the move to 5G, the pace of innovation will not be slowing anytime soon. As a result, shareholders and investors are quickly taking notice.

As a new normal is quickly being created, the wireless industry is an essential player in the equation and the dynamic opportunities ahead – and providers, investors, and consumers alike are paying close attention to the possibilities.
