The 5G Future Forum (5GFF) has released its first two technical specifications, developed to accelerate 5G multi-access edge computing (MEC) solution adoption around the world. The two new sets of technical specifications include, MEC Experience Management and MEC Deployment.
The 5GFF was founded in January 2020 by six of the world’s top leaders in 5G, including Telstra, América Móvil, Verizon, KT Corporation, Vodafone, and Rogers. The mission of the forum is to develop 5G interoperability specifications to aid the global deployment of 5G and MEC applications.
In efforts to achieve this mission, the 5GFF released the first technical specification to its members. The first specification is MEC Experience Management, which provides a framework of intent-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to discover network edge and workload capabilities. Possible expansion in the future may include network-intelligence driven MEC functions and capabilities. The second specification released is MEC Deployment, a standardized, scalable set of requirements for deploying and integrating MEC physical frameworks, including facilities, monitoring, security, and operational considerations.
“The 5G Future Forum was set up to unlock the full potential of 5G and MEC applications and solutions around the globe,” said Rima Qureshi, Chief Strategy Officer, Verizon. “5G is a key enabler of the next industrial revolution, where technology should transform how we live and work through applications including machine learning, autonomous industrial equipment, smart cars and cities, Internet of Things (IoT) and augmented and virtual reality. The release of these first specifications marks a major step forward in helping companies around the world create a seamless global experience for their customers.”
