Josh Parker, a general contractor from Parkers Choice Consulting, was tasked by a city in central Texas to assist in consolidating its wireless master plan. The three-phase deployment would enable more efficient monitoring and management of data from the city’s municipal water treatment and traffic systems.

Challenge

The city wanted to coordinate frequencies and vendors, streamlining to one Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) network and a single manufacturer that could provide all the solutions and services needed for the deployment. However, due to the project’s scope, the city decided to focus on one piece at a time, breaking down the deployment into three key phases, each with a different goal and need.

• Phase One: Installing 18 GHz solutions for a wireless fiber ring around the city.
• Phase Two: Deploying a CBRS solution for the management of water and waste monitoring and a base solution for further data management including floodgate, temperature, and surveillance.
• Phase Three: Providing an additional layer of CBRS standalone to work with artificial intelligence (AI) for traffic management and more.

Solution

Parker contacted Tessco, a leading value-added distributor to the wireless infrastructure construction industry, to help with this project due to their long-standing history. Parker and Tessco worked on the original network for the city a few years prior, so he knew he could count on Tessco to get this new job done. After connecting with Tessco, Parker selected Ventev, an industry-leading manufacturer of wireless infrastructure products for CBRS networks, to participate in this deployment based on their success in solving unique customer challenges. “Ventev was an easy choice for this deployment,” said Parker. “I’ve worked with Ventev and Tessco on a variety of projects over the past 20 years and have always been pleased with the high quality of their equipment and impressed with their unbeatable customer service and support.”

Ventev supplied two CBRS antenna models that are ideal for outdoor wireless networks. The first antenna was the CBRS Omni Antenna (SKU 203213), which features 3300-3800 MHz, 9dBi, and has 2 N-Style connectors. The second product was the CBRS Directional Antenna (SKU 243996), which features 3300-3800 MHz, 14dBi, and has 2 N-Style connectors. Mounted in various locations, including water towers, both antennas were selected because of their gain and beamwidths characteristics and their wind ratings above 120 mph.

Ventev’s antennas delivered the top-tier performance and efficiency needed for this deployment while offering a more cost-competitive, lower price point solution compared to competitors.

Result

The city ordered and installed over 100 Ventev CBRS Omni and Directional Antennas. The installations were completed with zero failures and supported the completion of phases one and two of the city’s wireless master plan.

The city in central Texas is also pleased with the deployment, praising Ventev for expanding the capabilities of their networks with a high performing, cost effective, and long-term solution. Phase three, the final phase of this project, began October 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in Q1 2022. Fifty Ventev antennas have already been ordered, prepped, and are awaiting installation.
